A sophisticated transition

In light of your recent attempts to link the ideas in your paragraphs to the question you are covering in your essay, I have found a good handout on TRANSITIONS.

It is compiled by the University of North Carolina and covers the what, the why and the how. And it has examples.

It is three pages long, but it is worth it to read through the whole document. This is a guide for you to make a solid step forward in your academic writing style.

Presentation Reflection

Watch the video of your presentation, review your plan and your criteria.

Write a reflection on your blog about your performance during the presentation. Did you make an improvement in the areas in which you had planned? Did your plan work? Why? Why not?

Due Monday May 8th.

Presentation Skills

Your presentations will be videoed. In order to prepare for the presentations next week, review your presentation criteria and your critical analyses of your own previous presentations.

Make a blog post with a plan for improvement. You should focus on one or two areas that you are going to consciously work to improve in this presentation.

Collecting data

You have worked to collect data to answer your research question over the last two weeks. What have you learned?

Write a blog post in which you critically reflect on the challenges you have faced designing your data collection for the current assignment. Consider the decisions you have made and how you can apply what you have learned to other aspects of your school work.

This is due before the start of our next lesson.

Your research...

I have commented on the blogs that had posts about your research plans.

Today, you need to start your research. That will look different for each group depending on whether your question can be answered by an experiment, a survey or information from the internet.

If you are designing an experiment, consider all that you have learnt in science when you are putting it together. You will need to consider variables and a control.

If you are designing a survey, consider whether you need a sampling question at the beginning to discover whether the person being surveyed has anything to say on the subject before you try to gather specific data from them. Also, you need to send me your survey before you send it to anyone. Consider it your pilot survey to check for any errors.

If you are gathering data from the internet, start by developing your lines of argument and preparing a note taking strategy.

Testing your research question

Use the criteria we looked at yesterday to test the quality of your research question.

If you think you have a good quality research question, the next step is to consider how you will conduct your research.

Will you use secondary resources? Are those sources available to you?

Do you need to conduct an experiment? What would that look like? Do you have access to the equipment you will need?

Will you conduct a survey? How will you do that? Who will you include in your sample/population?

Before you travel too far along the path of your research with your question, you need to make sure that it is a feasible one. If you cannot find the information you will need to answer the question, then you need to change the question.
