Formative submission folder for spreads due December 18th

Submit your spreads for the formative assessment in this folder.

Make sure you include all of the pieces and some evidence of your folder structure and use of naming conventions.

Concessionairy Letter Redo

After receiving your grades, many of you are interested in having another go at the letter.

You are welcome to make a copy of the letter document and work on it over the Winter Break. I will accept it for regrading up until January 6th. I will grade it over the exam period and enter any revised grades along with your semester exam grades.

Tuesday 15 December 2015

MLA intext citations

Remember, tonight your homework is to look at OWL @ Purdue and figure out how you would format the intext citation for the paraphrased section we looked at in class.

Make a blog post with your answer.

Wednesday 9 December 2015

Reflecting on the exam practice

Write a post for your blog using the following questions to guide your reflection:

What did you find challenging about the practice exam?

What did you learn about the real exam by doing the practice exam?

What are you going to do to prepare for the Semester Exam?

Tuesday 8 December 2015

Next spreads...

You have just completed (or are about to complete) the school photo spread for the class/grade you chose and you are going to complete the 'candid' photo page for that class for the Publication Design Semester Exam.

Choose another spread to prepare for submission for formative assessment on December 18th. This spread could be school photo spread for a second class/grade, a spread that has no time constraints such as Mrs. Abassi's message, or it can be a spread for an event that has already taken place. It is your choice.

You will be working on your chosen spread for class time and homework up until December 18th. Remember that you need to take time to work on it in the HS Lab for homework, if you do not have access to InDesign at home.

Mr. Arthur and myself are available to help you with technical and design questions. Make sure that your spread reflects our Instagram theme.

Preparation for Publication Design Semester Exam

For your Semester Exam, you will be completing the second spread for the class/grade for which you have just done the school photo spread. The second spread is the candid, "a day in the life" spread. You can look at last year's Yearbook to see examples.

In preparation for the exam you can contact the teacher/students (depending on grade level) for candid photos and a write up for the spread. You can have all of this ready for the exam session because you will need it to complete the spread. You can also bring sketches of your ideas for the spread.

During the exam period you will spend the time working with InDesign and PhotoShop, as appropriate to complete and submit the spread.

The spread will be graded using the Yearbook Spread Rubric that we have been using in class.

Preparation for the Semester Exam

Today we will be preparing for the Research Semester Exam. For your exam you will have 90 minutes to find and use resources to write an essay to answer a question that you will be given on the day.

You will write your essay on a Google Doc and transfer ownership to me by the end of the exam period.

To prepare for this, today you are going to practice using this past paper. You have the whole lesson to do this, you can find other resources online using Questia, Worldbook, Newsbank or Google to add to the evidence you are using to support your argument.

You will be graded using the following guide

Databases available through the Secondary Library

Databases can be accessed online anywhere, but they require a login to access because they are paid for by ISOI.

This week we are learning about Questia, Worldbook and Newsbank.

The test for this will be on Wednesday next week.

School photo spreads

This week is dedicated to finalising the photo spread for your grade.

Find ALL of the student pictures on the server and place them in an appropriately named folder.

Choose the best photo of each student and put it in a sub folder named 'Best'.

Insert the students' photos into the template that your group selected in alphabetical order by first name and label the photos accurately.

Place your finished spreads in this folder on Drive.

Friday 20 November 2015

Reflection Post

Write a blog post about locating information covering the following:

What have you learnt?

How has this affected how you search for information?

Tuesday 17 November 2015

School photo spreads with some Instagram style

Spend this week working on a template for a school photo spread for your chosen/assigned grade. Remember, the design has to be suitable for the largest class in your division, which is 24 students in Elementary and Middle School and 20 in High School.

Work on your templates individually. At this time, you do not need to put any photos in the spread but you do need to set up and copy the frames for those pictures.

We will finalise the style guide on Tuesday so that we are all working with the same palette for colour and font choices.

The templates are due at 4pm on Friday. You will place them in this folder on Google Drive.

Yearbook Theme

You have all worked hard on your Theme Packages. Well done to all of you.

Our theme for the 2015-16 ISOI Yearbook will be Instagram.

Google Search Results

In a very timely coincidence, I watched this video on TED Talks this morning. He talks about bias in Google's search results and gives some illustrations of this.

Well worth watching, considering we have been looking at this in class

Tuesday 10 November 2015

The anatomy of Google

Today in class we looked at how the Google algorithm works to rank the results you see on Google.

Write a blog post listing and explaining what you learnt today.

Think about how this will affect the results you see and how this might affect your search habits.

Write a paragraph to record your thinking.

Yearbook Theme Package Deadline

It was good to see you and your parents on Friday, but it meant that we missed two of three lessons last week, with PSATs and PTCs.

In light of this, you will have all week to work on your yearbook theme packages with your group. It is important that it be ready to submit at the end of our last lesson this week.

You will be presenting your packages during our first lesson next week.

Monday 26 October 2015

Sharing your discoveries

You have spent some time exploring Google's Super Powers, now it's time to share what you have learnt.

In 4 teams you will be creating a bulletin board to show how to use 3 of the super powers you have learnt about and, most importantly, how they can be used together to generate really powerful searches. You will have today, Thursday and next Tuesday to work on this during class. The bulletin board must be finished and ready for grading by the end of Tuesday's class.

Individually, you also need to make a video showing how you can use these three super powers to improve the results by demonstrating their use. Upload the video to a video sharing site with appropriate tags and embed into your blog. This is due at the beginning of next Tuesday's class.

Wednesday 21 October 2015

Create a theme package to support the theme idea that you support

To help us choose a theme for the Yearbook we have come up with a few ideas and then narrowed those down to the few ideas we have remaining.

In order to make a choice that we can all support, your task is to create a theme package to support the theme idea you would like to be chosen.

You can work alone or in groups no larger than 3. We have 13 students in the class, make sure you are being inclusive when you choose your groups.

In your theme package include:

The verbal theme and 3-4 sentences explaining why you think this is the best theme.
The imagery you would use to show the theme throughout the Yearbook.
The colours and fonts that would be used.
Create sample spreads for the following - cover, contents page, opening theme page, school photo page.
A Yearbook ladder

You can find the checklist/rubric for this project here.

We will negotiate the due date for this project in class.

Monday 19 October 2015

Yearbook Theme

We need to choose a theme for the Yearbook before we can finalise the Style Guide.

Investigate the following:

What is a theme?

Why do we need one?

How would you use the theme in the Yearbook?

Suggest two theme ideas and argue/explain how your ideas would be used in the Yearbook..

Faculty Profiles in the WIN

Have you noticed that two of the Faculty Profiles you have been writing have been published in the WIN? Last week and this week your work has been published. Congratulations to Mohera, Anjali and Shahan.

In the next issue the profiles for Mr. Ansell and Mr. Detweiler will be published.

Hayan started Mr. Ansell's profile but he has transferred out of the class. I would like a volunteer to take Hayan's work and finish it off so that it can be published in the next issue of the WIN alongside the profile on Mr. Detweiler.

Please email me to volunteer.

Wednesday 14 October 2015

Email the teacher(s) of the class that you will be covering for Yearbook

Before next class you need to send an email to the teacher(s) of the classes you are covering for the Yearbook. You signed up for these today during class.

In your email:

  • Introduce yourself - tell the teacher why you are sending them an email
  • Ask the teacher if you can make appointments to come and take candid pictures of them and their students (Elementary and Middle only, the High school does not have classes with their students outside of their subject areas)

Make sure you PROOFREAD your email before you send it. Mistakes are unprofessional and do  not add to the teachers' confidence in your ability to do this job well.

Remember to BCC me on the email.

Wednesday 7 October 2015

Peer critique

After watching your group's video, read the self critique of one of your group mates (everyone should receive a critique, so work it out between you) and comment on their post leaving your peer critique using their criteria.

Tuesday 6 October 2015

Library Orientation Presentation Videos

You can find the video of your presentations here. The videos are named for their content.

Your grades have been posted to Edline.

Secondary Library Orientation

The presentations were well done, except for a few factual inaccuracies.

For homework, write a summary of each of the presentations (except your own) and post it on your blog. This is due next lesson

Sunday 4 October 2015

Whole school photo for Yearbook

We have been asked to make some suggestions for the whole school photo this year. We need to have our proposals ready this week. Bring your ideas to class and we will pick our favourite ideas to put forward.

Edit: Please describe your idea in a comment on this post.

Friday 2 October 2015

Research Homework

You will be teaching your classmates about how to use the library (the specific area assigned to your group) on Tuesday in class. Make sure you and your groupmates are completely prepared!

Publication Design Homework

During our class today, you should have interviewed someone from another school.

Make a post on your blog with the name of the person you interviewed and two interesting things they had to say about SAISA Track, Field and Swim.

Upcoming summative deadlines

The Field Day spread needs to finalised for Tuesday October 6th. To submit your spread for the summative assessment, please update the .INDD file in the Field Day Spreads folder on Google Drive.

The faculty profile needs to be finalised for Friday October 9th. To submit your faculty profile for the summative assessment, please update the .JPEG file in the WIN profile submissions folder on Google Drive and upload your .INDD file as well.

Secondary Library Orientation Grading Criteria

You can access the grading criteria for the orientation here.

Volunteering to cover school events

Publication Design Journalists!

It is important that we cover all school events by sending a journalist, or two, to talk to people and take pictures.

Field Day was easy because it happened during the school day. There are a few other events like this, Cultural Diversity Day and Pakistan Day.

However, most school events happen outside of the time that you are scheduled to be in school. This weekend is the first example of this with the SAISA Track and Swim Meet.

It is crucial that we have people covering these events. Thank you to Jaemin, Rae, Omer, Sev, Shahan and Mohera for volunteering to cover this event.

I will be recording everyone's work on covering events on this Google Sheet, so that we can spread the load across all members of the class. You can see that Shahan has two check marks next to his name, this is because he has volunteered to come twice for this SAISA event.

I will be on campus this weekend to help manage the cameras. I will confirm on Monday that all the volunteers turned up to do their job, if not, I will remove their check marks from the sheet.

For those of you that did not volunteer this time, I hope you will be able to volunteer for the next event. If we do not have enough volunteers to cover an event, I will assign the work to someone who has no check marks next to their name, or has the least number of check marks next to their name.

You are in control of this, so long as you volunteer and take your share of the work. If you choose not to volunteer, you will be volunteered.

Using the Yearbook Spread Rubric

Look at the Yearbook Spread Rubric and think about what a spread in the 10/10 column would look like.

Check out this Yearbook spread and consider what you would give as a grade in each category on the rubric. For each grade you need to be able to explain why you have chosen it.

Tuesday 29 September 2015

Location, Location, Location

We are starting our unit on locating materials to help us learn. This unit is called Location, Location, Location.

You will have received an email with a link to the assignment sheet for the first part of this unit, which is all about finding stuff in the Secondary Library.

The great thing about this unit is that you can use the skills you learn in our library here, but also in any library you go to in the future, public or college.

Make sure you have the assignment sheet ready to hand for Wednesday's lesson.

Field Day spreads

Well done to those of you who followed the instructions left for Monday's class. I have updated your Edline with 50% of the total marks.

The grading will be done by you next class using the Yearbook Spread Rubric. This is the rubric that we will use for all the spreads in the Yearbook.

If you want to make sure you get an awesome grade, you can take another look at your .INDD document before our next lesson.

If you have not yet submitted a .INDD document to the Field Day Spreads folder, you can still do that, and the penalty for late work will be applied.

You may want to check that you  have uploaded a .INDD document rather than a .JPG of your spread. I want to see the .INDD.

Friday 18 September 2015

Critical Reflection

You have set the criteria for a good presentation. Make sure you post those criteria on your blog.

Once you have a clear idea of what a good presentation looks like, you can critique your own performance. Watch the video of your performance and write a critical reflection of your performance with reference to your criteria. Post this on your blog.

It is important to make sure that your critique is balanced. Your presentations all had good aspects to them as well as areas to improve.

A critical reflection includes a plan for improving your performance the next time you give a presentation. Write a plan for improvement that specifically addresses the areas in your presentation technique that are flawed.

Finish your Field Day write up before Monday September 28th

Please make sure you have finalised your Field Day write up before you come to class on Monday September 28th.

On September 28th you must finish your Yearbook spread for Field Day before the end of the lesson and upload it as an .indd document into this folder. You will receive a formative grade for this.

Tuesday 15 September 2015

Field Day Write Up

As part of your Field Day spread you will need some text. Tonight for homework, write 100-150 words about Field Day in a Google Doc and share it with me.

This will be graded so make sure you have proof read it for grammar and spelling mistakes.

Monday 14 September 2015

Field Day Photo Selection

For homework tonight you need to select 10 photos from the Field Day photo folders to use in a spread. Once you have selected a photo to use, MAKE A COPY and put the copy in a folder on your own drive. Do not remove or change any of the pictures in the class Google Folders.

When you have chosen your 10 pictures, make a blog post with all the pictures and write a sentence or two for each one that explains why you chose it.

You will need this for the lesson on Tuesday.

Wednesday 9 September 2015

Photography skills

Today we are investigating photography techniques in order to make sure we can take great pictures for the Yearbook. We are preparing for our first all-school event this Friday.

Before Friday you will need to book a slot with the camera to take pictures of Field Day activities. You can book your time with the camera through this Google Sheet.

Today, in pairs you will spend some time with Mr. Arthur to learn how to use the school camera. When you are not working with Mr. Arthur, you will be investigating photography techniques and your smartphone, if you have one.

Firstly,

Read this post about using your cellphone to take Yearbook pictures. Play with your own phone to see if you can get the right camera settings. Take some pictures.

Secondly,

Learn about the following photography techniques by looking them up online. Once you think you have a good idea about the techniques take some pictures while consciously using the individual techniques.

Rule of Thirds
Camera Angles (get down low, shoot straight up, kneel down, twist the camera, exaggerate features)
Framing the shot (photo composition)

Make sure you have some photos that are in the advised photo resolution that show examples of each of these photography techniques. When you have the pictures, write a blogpost detailing each of the techniques using your own photos to illustrate them.

This is due on Monday, September 14th.

Logical Fallacy Presentations

You will be presenting your 'speeches', in random order, on Tuesday, September 15th. Use the rubric and preparation sheet to help you plan your presentation.

You have been assigned a topic, you can find which topic you have been assigned here.

Your presentations will be recorded and we'll look at them to inform our work on presentation skills.

Friday 4 September 2015

Homework for this weekend...

The written part of your Profiles is not yet of an acceptable quality. Make sure you spend time this weekend working on this so that on Monday we can finish this off and get it to your client, Ms. Fossum.

Remember that the first paragraph should be about ISOI and the teacher's experience and qualifications. The second paragraph can be about other interesting achievements.

ALL of the bullets should have some relevance to ISOI or their achievements as a teacher.

Make sure that all of the proper nouns have capital letters, there are no spelling errors or typos.

Let's make a product you'll be proud to show to your client.

Homework this weekend...

I know that many of you did not finish your blogpost in class today, and that's okay. It is not homework this weekend.

Use your time this weekend to work with your partner on the Copyright Summative Assessment Video Project. This video and blogpost is due by the beginning of class on Thursday.

Wednesday 2 September 2015

Copyright Summative Assessment

Today we will talk about the summative assessment for our Copyright unit. You will be making a video and using the work of others appropriately and legally. You can find the assignment sheet here.

Make sure you read and understand the rubric for this assessment. You can find the rubric here.

Tuesday 1 September 2015

Profiles for the WIN - 1st submission

Well done to everyone who got their jpegs exported and in the folder on Google Drive!

For homework, please post the latest version of your bullets and narratives on your blog. You do not need to include the picture of the teacher, just the text.

Once you have posted your work on your own blog, go and visit the blogs of TWO of your classmates and leave a comment on their work for them.

Logical Fallacy Notes

Today we looked at logical fallacies and made notes.

Your homework today is to finish the notes and to make sure you have a digital record of them that is readable. Your record could be on your blog or in your drive, but you need to make a blog post that links to the notes.

Friday 28 August 2015

Backgrounds!

Today we learnt about colour palettes, font palettes and manipulating photos. The last part of our learning today was about backgrounds.

YOUR HOMEWORK is to work with your publication partner to find and agree on a background for your Faculty Profile.

Your 'publication partner' is the person who will have their profile in the same edition of WIN as you will. You can find their name in the Google Sheet we used to choose which teachers we will interview.

Look for a background using Google Images, remember to check that you can use it legally and that it is 'high quality'. When you have found something you like, send an email to your partner with a link to your preferred background to see what they think.

ON MONDAY, you will need your agreed upon background, the photos of your teacher, the bullet points and narrative in it's final proofread form.

You will be working in InDesign to make your faculty profile spread for the WIN. At the end of the lesson it will be finished and submitted to Ms. Fossum for approval.

Monday 24 August 2015

Share your learning!

Create a wall display to teach the secondary students about Creative Commons Licenses so that they know their rights and responsibilities.

You can find the details of this project in our Google Drive

Choose groups to work in and which room you will display your work. Edit the GoogleDoc to show this information.

Follow the instructions.

Copyright and Youtube

How does Youtube manage all the content that users upload?

Watch this TEDTalk about Youtube and copyright:

http://www.ted.com/talks/margaret_stewart_how_youtube_thinks_about_copyright

What do you think?

How is Youtube following copyright law that you have been learning about?

We do not have access to Youtube in Pakistan. Read the policies of either DailyMotion or Vimeo to see how they manage copyrighted content.

Post your thoughts and learning to your blog.

Email for Teachers

Well done to all of you who have sent me your draft emails for the teachers. If I received your email, then I have sent you some feedback. Make sure you act on that feedback then send the revised email to the teacher you will be interviewing.

When you have made your appointment with the teacher, please record the date and time of the interview in the relevant column in the Google Sheet for this project.

Remember to take your camera (if you need to borrow one, see Mr. Arthur in the HS Lab) and think before you go about how you are going to record the teacher's answers to your questions.

Do not be afraid to ask for clarification if you are confused! It is important that the information we publish is accurate. Be sure that you have recorded the teacher's information correctly and that you understand what they are telling you before you leave the interview. You will not get a second chance to interview the teacher to check for understanding. Whatever you have when you leave them, is what you will use to make their profile.

Best of luck!

Faculty Profile Project

Our client, Ms. Fossum, has asked us to create Faculty Profiles for the WIN, reference the picture below. You have seen the Google Sheet with the names of the teachers and signed up for the teachers for whose profiles you will be responsible.

Your homework tonight is to write the email you will send to the teacher that you will be interviewing first (the one for whom your name is highlighted for in the Google Sheet. DO NOT SEND THE EMAIL TO THE TEACHER, send the email to me so that I can take a look at it. I will give you some feedback, then you will be able to send an email to the teacher after making any corrections. We talked about the big ideas you need to include in your email, reference the picture below. Remember to paragraph!

I need to see your email tomorrow morning so that I can read them all and get the feedback to you as soon as possible. We have a very short time line on this!

What is ©?

In Lawrence Lessig's TED Talk, he talks about copyright, the Public Domain, Fair Use and alludes to Creative Commons.

What are these?

How do they relate to creativity?

Watch the following animation about Copyright:

Public Domain

Think about:

What protection is offered?
Who benefits from the protection offered?
Who can use the material being protected? Under what conditions?

You have this lesson and tomorrow's lesson to complete this investigation. Post your learning on your blog by the beginning of Friday's class.

Use subheadings and hyperlinks to help organize and attribute your work.

This work will be graded using the following criteria:

  • Accurate definition of the term (2)
  • An example that demonstrates understanding of the protection offered for each term (4)
  • A description that demonstrates understanding of who benefits and how they benefit for each term (4)
  • A description that demonstrates understanding of who can use the material and the conditions under which it can be used (6)

Creating and using a Gold Standard

Before we started organising the Pakistan Day seminars we were looking at how we can and why we should judge the quality and reliability of information we find on the Internet.

Your job now is to apply this learning to an information problem.

You are going to:

Choose a research question from a list
Decide what your Gold Standard for Information Sources would be
Find 5 websites that meet your Gold Standard
Report on how you established your Gold Standard and how the websites you have chosen meet those Gold Standard

In the The Good, the Bad and the Ugly folder you will find a document called Information Problems for your Gold Standard Work.

You will receive a grade for your report on the Gold Standard, for your report on the 5 websites and from your peers on how you have applied your Gold Standard.

Midterm

Well done! I have added the grading criteria to the bottom of your essays and will work on grading them over the next few days.

When you have time, please write a reflection of the exam...

How do you feel it went? How was the technology helpful?

How was the technology a barrier to showing what you have learnt?

How did the format of the exam and the question reflect what you have learnt over the semester?

To Cite or not to Cite, that is the Question

When do you need to cite? Make a blog post about the citation rules we covered in class today. Include your personal observations and examples that are meaningful to you.

10 marks for the rules.
20 marks for your personal observations and examples.

Due by next lesson.
