Active reading and notetaking strategies

We are going to look at different note taking tools to help us record information during the research process. Firstly we will be exploring digital tools.

In groups you will investigate one of the following online tools and present your findings to the rest of the class.

Evernote
Diigo
Yawas

Your presentation should include the what, where, and why of the tool with specific reference to keeping track of information and sources while conducting research.

Speakers for Pakistan Day

Pakistan Day at ISOI is held on March 17th. For the last four years the 10th grade has organised speakers to present seminars for the other grades in the secondary school. This year we will be organising these seminars again.

We will need 6-8 speakers so that we can divide the students, teaching assistants and teachers into audiences of appropriate size.

Students from previous years developed a checklist for you to work from so that you can see the timeline and activities that are needed to run a successful event.

The first step is to develop a list of people you think we should invite to the event and seek approval from Mr. Martin.

To do this, come up with ideas for people you think we should invite, do some research about them and write a blog post outlining who you propose, their achievements and why they would be a suitable speaker for our event.

Complete the first three columns of this chart for your proposed speaker. Mr Martin will be reviewing your blogposts and granting approval.

How useful is your Golden Standard?

Choose another student in the class and use their Golden Standard to find the best website to provide evidence for one of their lines of inquiry.

DO NOT choose the person sitting next to you. You must choose to work with the Golden Standard of someone with whom you do not usually interact.

Post a comment on their Golden Standard blog post to give them feedback on the usability of their Golden Standard.

Practice makes perfect #2

Today you need to complete your pre-research and identify your lines of inquiry (minimum 3).

Once you have identified your lines of inquiry, you will need to design your Golden Standard for the research phase. Remember to be specific for each of the Who, What, Why, Where and When criteria. A non specific criteria is not helpful when you are trying to apply it when evaluating the quality of information sources.

Make sure you post the lines of inquiry and Golden Standard on your blog before the end of this lesson.

Practice makes perfect

We are going to imagine that we have been told to write a research essay so that we can practice designing a Golden Standard.

Choose a question from the list of questions in this document, make sure that no one sitting next to you, or in front/behind, has chosen the same questions as you have.

Consider the possible lines of inquiry. Make a list/ graphic organiser for these.

Now design a Golden Standard for this inquiry.

Publish both the lines of inquiry and the Golden Standard on your blog.
