We are going to imagine that we have been told to write a research essay so that we can practice designing a Golden Standard.

Choose a question from the list of questions in this document, make sure that no one sitting next to you, or in front/behind, has chosen the same questions as you have.

Consider the possible lines of inquiry. Make a list/ graphic organiser for these.

Now design a Golden Standard for this inquiry.

Publish both the lines of inquiry and the Golden Standard on your blog.

Creating a Gold Standard for information sources

With a partner and using the following scenario, create a Gold Standard for a website that you would use to address your cousin's concerns. Publish your Gold Standard on your blog.

"Your cousin has heard that you should not drink bottled water that’s been sitting in a hot car because the plastic bottles leak a toxic substance that increases the drinker’s chance of developing cancer.

As breast cancer runs in your family, this is an issue dear to your heart. What characteristics would you want to see (who, what, when,where, why) in a website you would be willing to use to advise your cousin about whether it’s safe to drink the water."

If you wish to improve your grade for the database test, you can work on it in the Secondary Library with me during lunch break or after school over the next few days. 

Concessionaries letter rewrite

Remember what we learnt in class yesterday.

Because it is a letter, you will need to consider formatting and to introduce yourself in the beginning paragraph.

Because you are making an argument, you will need a thesis statement, a paragraph for each point in your thesis statement which contains evidence to support your position and a conclusion.

Because you are writing a formal letter to the board, you will need to avoid using contractions.

Grading criteria:

You will be graded using the following criteria.

Main ideas support/argue the thesis [10 marks]

Main ideas are supported by evidence [10 marks]

Correct citations [20 marks]

(as this is a letter, you could choose to include attribution in your prose)

Argumentation [10 marks]
